What to Expect at a Dog Show: A Tail-Wagging Day Out!
March 17, 2025If dogs could talk, I imagine they’d have a lot to say—mostly about treats, belly rubs, and why you keep putting them in ridiculous outfits. But even without words, our furry best friends are constantly communicating with us.
Dogs have an entire language made up of body movements, facial expressions, and even sounds. The problem? Most humans are terrible at speaking "dog." But don’t worry, we’ve done the research, and we’re here to help you become fluent in canine communication.
Here are ten ways your dog is trying to tell you something, along with what it actually means.
1. The Eye Contact of Love
Have you ever caught your dog staring at you like they’re deeply in love? Congratulations, they are. When dogs make prolonged eye contact with their favourite humans, it releases oxytocin, the same "love hormone" that bonds mothers with their babies.
So next time your pup locks eyes with you across the room, don’t be weirded out. They’re not plotting your demise, they’re just telling you they adore you.
2. The Exposed Belly of Ultimate Trust
A dog rolling onto their back and showing you their belly is the canine equivalent of saying, “I trust you with my life.”
However, be careful. This does not always mean "rub my belly." Some dogs expose their bellies as a passive way to show submission. If they seem tense, leave the belly alone. But if they’re wiggly and happy? Go in for the rubs, they won’t mind at all.
3. The Tail Wag: It’s Not Always Happy
Most people assume that a wagging tail means a happy dog, but that’s only half true. Dogs wag their tails for different reasons:
-
A loose, full-body wag usually means they’re happy and excited.
-
A fast, stiff wag can signal alertness or agitation.
-
A tail tucked while wagging might mean they’re nervous or unsure.
So don’t just look at the tail, check the rest of their body language too before assuming they’re in a great mood.
4. The Lean-In of Love
Ever had your dog lean against you like they’ve had a rough day and just need a moment? This isn’t just for comfort, it’s a sign of deep affection and trust.
Dogs that lean on you are essentially saying, "You’re my safe place." Either that, or they just realized they have no concept of personal space. Either way, enjoy the close proximity of your furry friend.
5. The Zoomies of Pure Joy
You know when your dog suddenly sprints around the house like an out-of-control furry tornado? That’s called the zoomies, or Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs).
This burst of energy usually means one of three things:
-
They’re super happy.
-
They’ve been cooped up for too long and need to run.
-
They just pooped and feel amazing.
Yes, some dogs celebrate their bathroom achievements with a victory lap. No judgement.

6. The Head Tilt of Confusion (or Manipulation)
The classic head tilt is adorable, iconic, and often used to melt human hearts. But why do dogs do this?
Most of the time, tilting their head means they’re trying to understand you. They may be picking up on certain words, tones, or even watching your facial expressions and body language.
However, if they’ve learned that head tilting gets them treats or attention, well, congratulations, you’ve been played.
7. The Paw of Persuasion
Ever been minding your own business when your dog suddenly places a paw on your leg? This is their way of saying:
-
Pay attention to me.
-
I love you.
-
You stopped petting me, and I find that unacceptable.
Some dogs even use their paws as a form of gentle begging, usually when food is involved. Stay strong, don't fall for it (or do, because let’s be honest, they’ll win anyway).
8. The Side-Eye of Judgement
Dogs have mastered the art of “throwing shade.” If you’ve ever seen your dog give you the classic side-eye look, it usually means one of two things:
-
Mild annoyance; something along the lines of, “You seriously just said the word ‘bath’? Unbelievable.”
-
Guarded possession; if they’re side-eyeing while chewing a toy or bone, they’re saying, “Nuh-uh. Mine! Don’t even think about it.”
Either way, the side-eye is peak canine sarcasm, and we respect it.
9. The Yawn That’s Not Just Sleepy
Sure, dogs yawn when they’re tired. But did you know they also yawn when they’re stressed?
If your pup yawns repeatedly in a situation that seems tense, like at the vet or when meeting a new dog, they’re actually trying to calm themselves down. It’s their way of saying, “I’m a little uncomfortable, but I’m trying to relax.”
Bonus fact: If your dog yawns when you yawn, it means they’re emotionally connected to you. Or they’re just really good at copying you.
10. The Happy Wiggle Butt
Some dogs take wagging their tails to the next level - they wiggle their entire back-side like they just can’t contain their excitement.
If your dog’s whole body starts shaking uncontrollably when they see you, congratulations, you are their favourite person in the world. This is the ultimate display of joy, and you should absolutely cherish it.
Final Thoughts: Listen to Your Dog
Dogs might not speak our language, but they’re constantly telling us how they feel. Whether it’s love, excitement, nervousness, or just the need for belly rubs, they’ve got a whole system of communication—we just have to learn how to understand it.
So next time your dog gives you the side-eye, places a paw on your lap, or zooms around the house like a maniac, pay attention. You might just realize they’ve been talking to you all along.
And if all else fails, just give them a treat. That usually makes everything better.
