𝙅𝙤𝙞𝙣 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝘽𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝘿𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚!

Inspired by the story of 𝙋𝙝𝙪𝙩𝙪 𝙋𝙪𝙥 𝙆𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙠𝙬𝙚𝙣𝙞, we’re collecting blankets for dogs in need across the Kabokweni community this winter.

Be part of our Lowveld Canine Coaching Outreach Program and help us make a pawsitive impact!

1️⃣ KEEP IT SHORT: 5 minutes is better than nothing. Quality beats quantity.

2️⃣ MAKE IT INDOOR-FRIENDLY: Sit, down, stay, paw, and place work beautifully inside.

3️⃣ USE MEALTIMES: Hand-feed your dog their kibble as training rewards. Zero extra calories, maximum impact.

4️⃣ MENTAL ENRICHMENT COUNTS: Puzzle feeders, sniff mats, and Kong toys are training the brain, too.

5️⃣ JOIN A CLASS: External accountability is a game-changer! Classes keep you and your dog on track.

Term 3 starts end of July - that's your goal!

❌ MYTH: "Dominant dogs need to be dominated - show them who's boss."

✅ FACT: Modern dog training science has moved well beyond dominance theory. Dogs don't actually live in strict dominance hierarchies as was once thought.

What dogs DO respond to is clear, calm, consistent communication and 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Winter dehydration is a real thing for dogs!

Many dogs drink less water in winter because they feel less thirsty in cooler weather, but they still need proper hydration.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴:
• Add a little warm (not hot!) water to their food
• Keep water bowls clean and fresh
• Try a pet water fountain — many dogs prefer moving water
• Offer a warm, low-sodium bone broth as an occasional treat

A hydrated dog is a healthy dog!

CONSISTENCY IS KEY — even in winter!

𝗪𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗱. The blanket is warm. The last thing you want to do is go outside for training. We get it... and so does your dog!

But here's why staying consistent through winter matters:

✅ Dogs thrive on routine. A break in training can cause regression in behaviour.
✅ Short sessions (even 5–10 minutes indoors!) count.
✅ Winter is actually a great time to work on indoor commands: sit, stay, down, leave it.
✅ Your dog still needs mental stimulation - a bored dog finds their own entertainment (and you probably won't like it 😅).

Tip: Lay a mat near the heater and do a short training session right there. Warm, productive, and bonding!

Did you know? Dogs have about 300 million smell receptors in their noses - compared to about 6 million in humans. That's why scent work is one of the best mental enrichment activities for your dog!

Just 10 minutes of nose work can be as tiring as a 30-minute walk.

Ask us about enrichment activities in class! 🐾
